3rd Meeting of Members: Books and debates to rethink ourselves from an anti-racist perspective

📚🌹 Tomorrow is #SantJordi2025 and Saturday is our 3rd Members' Meeting, a space for reflection, learning and connection open to all members to share experiences, strengthen bonds and reflect together on the challenges and opportunities of our cooperative. This year, for the first time, we are focusing the day on a specific topic: anti-racism and the construction of truly inclusive communities, and for this reason we have made an effort to bring a line-up of luxury speakers. We take the opportunity to recommend some books that they have published, and that you can use to comment at the meeting.

📚 Books and authors that will accompany us:

🔸 Safia El Aaddam
Is Spain racist? (Ediciones B, 2024)

Activist and communicator Safia El Aaddam will open our members' meeting on Saturday, April 26th by inviting us to question the roots of racism and the mechanisms that perpetuate it. This is what she does in this book, investigating the origin of racism in the Spanish state and its process of historical erasure, with rawness, honesty, full of data and from her own testimony.

🔸 Xavier Giró
Against neutrality. A journalism of peace and struggle (Pollen Editions; Crític, 2024)

Xavier Giró, journalist and expert in media discourse analysis, will participate in the inaugural dialogue of our members' meeting on Saturday, April 26, with Safia El Aaddam, in order to help understand how racism is also reproduced from institutional and media discourses. In his latest book, he condenses a proposal for future journalists and activists to be even more critical of the media, but in a tactical and strategic way.

🔸 Tenants' Union (with Carme Arcarazo)
Tenant power. Urgent notes for self-organization (Uncontrollable, 2025)

Whether or not you have a problem with your landlord, living in a rental is a conflict in itself. This book is a training and organizational tool for anyone who is forced to enrich others simply by needing a home. Written collectively by the Tenants' Union, one of its spokespeople, Carme Arcarazo, will participate in our Members' Meeting on Saturday, April 26.

🔸 Rocío Quillahuaman
Brown (Blackie Books, 2022)

Rocío Quillahuaman was born in Lima, and ten years later she moved with her family to Barcelona. Today she is one of the best-known illustrators in our country thanks to her animations. She will participate with a humorous monologue to enliven our Members' Meeting next Saturday, April 26. Her first book is a humorous memoir about a personal search for a place and people that she can finally recognize as 'home'.

🔸 David Karvala
The anti-fascism of the 99%. The united fight against racism and the extreme right (Ed. La Tempestad, 2019)

David Karvala, activist and one of the spokespersons of the Unitat Contra el Fascisme i el Racisme platform, will participate in one of the first parallel workshops of the Members' Meeting on Saturday, April 26, designed to provide practical tools on how to combat racism from housing and neighborhood communities. In his book we will find contributions to the debate, historical analysis and reflections on the real current threat of the extreme right around the world.

✊ Also participating will be:

  • Fatima Taleb, community mediator and expert technician in interculturality
  • Miguel Ruiz, member of the DESCA Observatory
  • Sheikh Drame, anti-racist activist and president of SOS Racisme Catalunya
  • MIGRATION, an association that aims to promote the participation of migrant and racialized people in the ESS fabric
