La Bertrana is not only a residential building, but also a symbol of memory, commitment and social transformation in ManresaThe building has been named in honor of the first librarian of the Popular Library of Manresa, Pilar Bertran i Vallès (1905-1998), who also gives his name to the street where the project is located.
This cooperative project not only seeks to offer housing, but also build a community based on collaboration, growth and sustainability, values that connect with Bertran's innovative and social spirit. Naming it "La Bertrana" is a way of remembering that, just as education transformed society at the time, cooperativism can be a transformative tool today.
The new cooperative housing project for lease will be the cooperative's second in Manresa. It will consist of 60 homes of official protection and 336 m² of community spaces. It is located on the Pont de Vilomara road, number 121, on the corner with Pilar Bertran street, and between the neighborhoods of Viladordis and La Balconada, on municipal land.
The objective of the project is to generate new sheltered housing at affordable prices and promote a stable, affordable housing offer that respects the values of the social and solidarity economy. It will be the second largest cooperative housing development in Catalonia, after the Sant Andreu inclusive project in Barcelona with 62 homes.
In this sense, this project aims to provide a response to both the problem of access to housing and that of social inclusion. As collective ownership and management, the project proposes an alternative way of accessing housing, through the democratic and participatory management by the same people who will live there.
The building
The La Bertrana building will be built keeping in mind the most demanding criteria of sustainability, and will have a almost zero energy consumption, and the building works will be carried out throughout 2025 and 2026.

The new building will have a constructed area of 7.173 square meters, and will consist of four collective spaces and one local municipal, in addition to parking spaces. The large community areas will be designed by the shared life between all the neighbors, the uses of which will be decided by the future partners.
Construction on the building began in February 2025, and is expected to the Lacol architecture cooperative for its architectural design. The construction follows criteria of energy sustainability, almost zero consumption (nZEB), with production ofenergy from renewable sources, construction with materials and low-impact construction systems, in addition to minimal waste generation and reuse of materials. It is expected that members will be able to move in at the beginning of 2027.
Public housing policy from community management
This project is made possible thanks to the public-cooperative collaborationThe plot, owned by the municipality, has been transferred to the cooperative by the Manresa City Council through a 75-year renewable surface right, to carry out the delegated promotion of stable, decent and affordable housing. That is why these homes will receive the qualification ofSocial housing.
