Statement of support for Casa Buenos Aires

Last Wednesday, November 28, police brutality and repression put themselves, once again, at the service of speculation with the eviction of the House Buenos Aires. But, unfortunately, it is not an isolated case: in full State of Alarm, in the midst of an unprecedented social crisis and with Minister Ábalos declaring in Congress that there were no evictions in the State, hundreds of families, only in Barcelona , have become homeless in the last month.

Casa Buenos Aires is one symbol of neighborhood organization. The building, an old modernist hotel that ceased to function as a residence for the elderly eight years ago - the Llar Betània - was recovered in 2019 to turn it into a social and community space that has already become a " essential asset for Vallvidrera", as they claimed in a statement fifteen entities in the neighborhood a few months ago.

Sostre Cívic, in 2017, we negotiated with the property to make this building a leasehold senior cooperative housing project, a non-speculative, transformative alternative model. The financial demands of the Paüls parents, owners of the property, made any type of agreement impossible. They had other plans for the building: to turn it into a luxury hotel.

For all these reasons, since Sostre Cívic we want to add to the shows of support that Casa Buenos Aires has received over the last few hours, and invite all the people and entities in Barcelona to join in the demonstration that is called for tomorrow Saturday, October 31 at 18 p.m. in the cathedral square.

The defense will remain more alive than ever, because Casa Buenos Aires already belongs to the people.
