SENIOR COOPERATIVE HOUSING

Senior cooperative housing it is a community housing alternative for the elderly. It deals with involuntary loneliness and isolation, puts care at the center and combines mutual help and independent living.

Sostre Cívic is a housing cooperative in right of use that promotes senior cooperative housing.

WHAT IS?

Senior cooperative housing is a cooperative housing model for seniors that includes private spaces for each living unit and shared spaces.

It is born from the restlessness of women and men who consider an active old age that focus on care and coexistence

This proposed alternative way of living in old age is based on self-management and the participation of all the people involved. They are in charge of designing the spaces and thinking about the functioning of the community.

Senior cooperative housing is based on the cooperative housing model in right of use, which is widespread in countries such as Denmark or Uruguay, and which in Catalonia have been promoted since 2004 by different entities such as Sostre Cívic.

This model has two basic characteristics that differentiate it from other types of cooperative housing: collective ownership and right of use.

WHY MAY YOU BE INTERESTED?


Because it is designed to improve the lives of the people who live there and their environment. The housing for private use is complemented by common areas for meeting, mutual help and shared activities. In addition, it is committed to a model of life that respects the environment: sharing improves energy efficiency and reduces waste.


Because he is careful with the individuality within the collectivity, also in the economic field. Each partner participates in the common expenses but maintains their financial independence.


Because it is economically viable. The project is financed collectively and this allows to reduce costs.


Because it puts care at the center. Co-housing includes spaces and services to attend to the needs of the elderly.


Because it is cooperative. The project is managed by the partners, without hierarchies, through collective governance and self-promotion.

WHO ARE WE?
We are the Senior Area of Sostre Cívic that we are in charge of promoting senior cooperative housing:
  1. We identify heritage to offer to the groups that are created.
  2. We promote the creation of seed groups for new cooperative projects.
  3. We design and promote workshops and training strategies for the people involved in the projects.
  4. We unite and revitalize the groups formed.
  5. We promote contacts with different organizations and institutions.
  6. We act as a link between the senior groups that are consolidating.
WHAT PROJECTS DO WE HAVE UNDERWAY?

Walden XXI

Walden XXI is a group of people between 55 and 70 years old who want to rehabilitate an old disused hotel in Sant Feliu de Guíxols to build 31 apartments and large community spaces with services for the elderly. Right now we have the last vacancies!

We work under the umbrella of Sostre Cívic, making contacts with the administration and other entities that make the project possible and we place special emphasis on our qualitative growth as a group and on the idea of ​​living together until the end and respecting diversity.
