We strengthen our mutual support tools in the face of the crisis

We live in difficult and unstable times. Moments that have made clear the importance of defending a more communal way of living, of establishing bonds between the people around us and of taking care of each other. In this crisis, we reaffirm our commitment to the cooperative housing model in right of use as an alternative to individualistic relationships based on the economic benefit imposed on us by the capitalist system. It is more important than ever to defend this model, which allows for the creation of communities of mutual support and puts people's lives at the center, as a tool of resistance and collective response.

Therefore, Sostre Cívic we have decided to take the following measures in the face of adversity and the inconsistent present (and future):

    • We have created one contingency fund, initially endowed with €3.000, to deal with the problems that may arise as a result of this confinement situation, of the working people and partners who are part of the projects in the development or coexistence phase. This amount comes from the Cooperative Education and Promotion Fund and will serve, for example, to face possible payment difficulties for people living in housing projects of Sostre Cívic.
    • Equally, we favor the reconciliation of life in these critical circumstances, and we facilitate a 25% reduction in working hours for working people with dependents, without salary modification. With this line, the timetables and vacation periods of all workers are also made more flexible with the aim of further facilitating a reduction in effective working hours if necessary.
    • We also report that the Royal Decree 8/2020, from 17 of març, determines that the reinstatement of social contributions that cause unemployment during the period of validity of the state of alarm, is extended for six months. Despite this, and as is common practice a Sostre Cívic, as long as circumstances permit, contributions will continue to be returned to the cooperative in accordance with the established procedure and with the greatest possible agility.

Finally, we invite you to read the manifesto of the Solidarity Economy Network ("The coronavirus does not fall from the sky, but from capitalism") and to consult the informative space on the coronavirus on the website of the Federation of Labor Cooperatives, where you will find different documents and articles from the economic, labor and health fields.
