Walden XXI is the first cooperative senior housing project in Catalonia. After many years of work, the rehabilitation works of the old hotel in Sant Feliu de Guíxols where the project will be located will begin soon, thanks to the support received in the participatory titles campaign. This campaign has already raised €254.000, 70% of the final goal, through the crowdfunding tool Tornassol de Sostre Cívic. This tool is at the service of the cooperative's projects to ensure their viability by making them more affordable.

Achieving so much money collectively demonstrates the potential of cooperative housing in right of use to transform the way of living in the community and guarantee the right to housing. But Walden XXI has not been the only success of Tornassol. The project titles of Cal Paler Nou they obtained €450.000 in just 20 days to buy the plot of land where the project will be developed, and also served to complete the financing of the cooperative housing built in Barcelona on municipal land, such as La Balma (€117.000 collected) i Cirerers (€167.000 collected).

Taking advantage of the good reception of the campaign, one will be opened during the months of May and June second issue of participatory titles of Walden XXI. This second installment will have the same conditions: participatory titles from €500, with remuneration from 2,25 to 2,50% depending on the maturity period chosen (4 or 6 years).

The project is entering the final phase: the rehabilitation works will start soon and there is already a financing commitment with different banking entities. The aim is to include all people who want to contribute to making this possible by acquiring participatory degrees. In this way they will help build the Walden XXI building and will be making an ethical investment in a project that seeks to transform the care model for the elderly in Catalonia.

By opening the participation of financing, the Walden XXI project group wants to ensure the viability of the first cooperative senior housing project in Catalonia. "By investing in Walden XXI we open up the possibility of being part of our revolution to make another old age possible, active and self-managed", assure from the group.

Walden XXI, a pioneering project in Catalonia and the State

In 2018, we started promoting a new pioneering modality in Catalan territory: senior cooperative housing, aimed at elderly people and with private spaces for each living unit and common areas for meeting, mutual help and shared activities . In short, we want to break with the current model of residences and propose a response to the crisis of care in old age from self-management, radically changing the ways of understanding and living this stage of life.

The first project of this nature started with Walden XXI in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. We pushed the project to locate it in the old Jecsalis Hotel, built in 1970 and which operated for years as a humble two-star establishment. With this project, we want to recover the property by capturing private assets to pass into cooperative hands under principles of the common good and not speculative.

The rehabilitation works counting on turning it into 31 complete homes and a wide provision of collective spaces totaling more than 800 m2. The common areas are designed for the specific needs of the elderly (three multipurpose rooms with industrial kitchen, dining room, living rooms, interior garden, infirmary, physiotherapy room, workshops, concierge, laundry, changing rooms, office, storage rooms and garage spaces).
