3 years ago we started the project of the first cooperative senior housing in Catalonia... and we hope to make it possible in 2023, which is the expected date to move in! We will rehabilitate an old hotel in Sant Feliu de Guíxols to convert it into 31 private apartments and different community spaces (20% of the project area) such as multipurpose rooms, kitchen, dining room, library-computers, laundry, storage rooms, terraces, interior garden, terraces, DIY workshops, warehouse, etc.

Currently there are 9 apartments available, and we are looking for people who want to live their old age in an active and self-managed way, and who are between 50 and 67 years old to fill the group. But... what is Walden XXI?

It is a project ofcooperative housing in right of use exclusively for seniors, designed to have care and health services in the future, when the users need it. Has thirty-one homes, private and adapted for the elderly, in a regime of right of use between 40 and 56 m2, with a wide provision of collective spaces of more than 800 m². The promotion will be built with criteria of social economy, solidarity and sustainability.

This project will be the first senior co-housing that will exist in Catalonia of these characteristics and wants to serve as a guide for other projects that want to replicate the initiative in other places in the territory, to offer an active and self-managed old age and at the same time to reactivate disused heritage, in this case privately owned, with a model of non-speculative housing, self-managed, at cost, non-profit cooperative as a alternative to commercial residences and unwanted solitude of the elderly.

At this moment the driving group has already made the purchase of the property. The building is an old disused hotel from the 70s located in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and very central with all health, social, equipment and commercial services very close. The project has been entrusted to the architecture team of We are Habitat, who working in a participatory way with the driving group are designing the private and community spaces of the future building and the comprehensive rehabilitation works to be done.

How to participate?

Of all the interested people, the current driving group will choose those it considers most similar to the project. We explain how the process of incorporating new members will be:

• If you are interested in being part of it, fill out this form .
• The group will analyze the different applications received and choose the ones it considers most similar. The group's criteria for welcoming new people are:
  • Knowledge and commitment in the project, and in the cooperative model of right of use.
  • Age, to be able to set up a balanced group to favor generational succession. (An age pyramid is being prepared where the free bands are contemplated. At the moment the range of 67 to 70 years is already full, interested persons must be between 50 and 67 years old).
  • Professions and skills of people who can help grow the project
• In addition, they are essential requirements:
  • Financial capacity to meet the expected expenses.
  • Degree of autonomy.
  • Be partners of Sostre Cívic, once the request is accepted (you can join it here).
• We will invite the people who consider themselves most similar to one personal or group interview for mutual knowledge and to clarify doubts. The rest of the people will also be informed and will become part of a waiting list.
• The driving group will propose, from then on, to the people most similar to join the project immediately, with the approval of the Assembly or on the waiting, reserve or information lists.
